Vacher: The arrest of a shepherd
In 1897, Vacher tried to rape a young field worker while she was working in Ardèche. The deed happened to be seen by the field worker’s husband. Vacher was overwhelmed and handed over to the police. This did result in a three-month prison sentence. During his detention, he confessed to several murders in an exchange of letters. The psychologist Alexandre Lacassagne classified the multiple killer as accountable. Joseph Vacher received the death penalty as a court judgment. At the age of 29, he was executed by guillotine on December 31, 1898 in Bourg-en-Bresse.
